Getting here is easy. You can fly with Jetstar to Avalon and hire a car; connect with a train to Geelong and Warrnambool; ferry across from Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula to the Bellarine Peninsula; or you can drive along excellent roads from Melbourne, Ballarat, Hamilton and Adelaide.
By Air
Flying in to the Great Ocean Road has never been easier. The ring road from Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine makes the journey to Geelong much easier as does direct flights into Avalon Airport just under half an hour away.
Avalon Airport
Geelong's Avalon Airport is home to Australia's cheapest flights to and from Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth with Jetstar seven days a week. The airport has experienced a lot of success since it opened. Avalon is the perfect gateway to Geelong and the Great Ocean Road.
Getting to the Avalon
Melbourne CBD is 55km from Avalon Airport and Geelong CBD is 19km from Avalon. There are no toll roads between Melbourne CBD and Avalon Airport
Melbourne Airport
Regular flights from a range of overseas and domestic destinations arrive at Melbourne Airport, the closest capital city access point to the Great Ocean Road. Geelong, the eastern gateway to the region, is a 55-minute drive away, via the Western Ring Road and the Princes Freeway.
Regional Airports
There are three regional airports servicing smaller aircrafts. They are located in Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton.
By Bus
A number of daily bus services arrive in Melbourne from various Australian capital and regional cities. From the New South Wales capital Sydney, north of the Victorian capital Melbourne, the bus trip to Melbourne takes about 12 hours. The journey from the South Australian capital Adelaide, west of Melbourne, is about 10 and a half hours. Connections to the Great Ocean Road - by air, car or rail - can be made from Melbourne. Return bus services operate along the Great Ocean Road between Geelong and Apollo Bay. Vline provides a weekly service between Apollo Bay and Warrnambool which operates on Fridays. Buses linked to the intercity train service from Melbourne via Geelong also run between the coastal city of Warrnambool, via Port Fairy and Portland, to the South Australian city of Mt Gambier.
Gull Melbourne connection
Getting to and from Melbourne Airport - Geelong, is easy. Gull Airport Service provides over 150 scheduled services weekly, between Geelong and Melbourne, 7 days a week, from early morning to late evening. A return fare is $45 per adult, single fare is $25.

National bus services
Country and interstate buses pick-up and depart from the Melbourne Transit Centre at 58 Franklin Street, near the top of Swanston Street, and at Spencer Street Station. Daylight and overnight buses arrive each day from both Adelaide and Sydney and take between 11 and 12 hours.
Greyhound Australia
Greyhound Australia is a national coach operator servicing 1,100 destinations daily. Journey from interstate to Melbourne and connect with others to Geelong.
By Car and Motorbike
You can drive to the Great Ocean Road region from interstate on excellent highways and freeways. From Sydney, you can take the Hume Freeway and then travel to Geelong via the Western Ring Road and Princes Freeway, making your connection with the Great Ocean Road. (This trip takes around 12 hours. Most travellers break their journey with an overnight stop.) From Melbourne, Geelong is a 55-minute drive via the West Gate and Princes freeways. A network of highways also link regional centres to Geelong and various other points along the Great Ocean Road. The western gateway to the region is at Nelson, near the South Australian border. Excellent roads connect with the South Australian capital of Adelaide, 490km away. Cars and mobile homes are readily available for hire in the major cities.
Rental Cars
A great way to explore what the Great Ocean Road region has to offer is naturally by car. Connecting to one of the key cities or towns along the way via public transport is reasonably simple. Then hire a car and go your own way! Hire cars are available at the airports, Melbourne and throughout the region, including Geelong, Warrnambool and Portland.

Road safety
Visitors are invited to drive on our roads and enjoy the experience, but need to be aware of Australia's road rules.
Keeping left
Overseas visitors are reminded that (like in all other states in Australia) vehicles are driven on the left side of the road in Victoria.
Bicycle lanes
Bicycle lanes are indicated by a bicycle lane sign and a continuous or broken white line.
A driver must not drive in a bicycle lane during the times it is operational, except for up to 50 metres before turning or when parking.

By Ferry
The Peninsula Searoad ferry provides a car and passenger service connecting the Mornington Peninsula to the Bellarine Peninsula . The service runs hourly from 7am to 6pm, everyday. This is a great way to extend your touring experience to Phillip Island and Wilson's Promontory National Park. Crossing the bay
The trip from Queenscliff to Sorrento takes 40 minutes. During the crossing you will enjoy many wonderful sights and experiences:
- Historic Queenscliff from the bay capturing great views of the buildings and lighthouses.
- Cliff-top homes and historic buildings of Portsea and Sorrento
- Point Nepean fort
- The spectacular "Rip" at the entrance to Port Phillip bay
- Boating activity all round including the pilot boat if you are lucky.
The boats
There are two boats crossing each other in the bay en route to Queenscliff and Sorrento: the MV Queenscliff and the MV Sorrento. The carrying capacity of each vessel is 80 vehicles and 700 passengers. Both have been purpose built and are unaffected by rough weather conditions, making your trip a pleasant one all year round.
By Rail
Trains from interstate capital cities arrive at Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station on Spencer Street, allowing ongoing connections to Geelong and Warrnambool. If you arrive by air and plan to travel by train, you can catch an airport commuter bus into Melbourne and then take one of the regular train services to Geelong from Southern Cross railway station (takes about 55 minutes). Train services also connect with the Shipwreck Coast city of Warrnambool via Geelong. Buses provide a further link with the coastal village of Port Fairy and the city of Portland. Car hire is available in the major centres.
